Tom Jones, Aviation Director City of San Antonio

In January 2016, Noel T. “Tom” Jones was appointed to serve as the City’s Aviation Director for a 12-month period while the City conducts a national search for a permanent director.  In his role as Aviation Director, he oversees the day-to-day operations at the San Antonio Airport System, made up of the San Antonio International Airport and Stinson Municipal Airport.  Combined the airports account for an economic impact of more than $5.1 billion annually and support approximately 100,000 jobs in the region.

 As the City’s Aviation Director, Tom will oversee the organization’s strong focus on enhancing customer experience, successfully shepherding the airports’ capital improvement projects and increasing the international airport’s air service, both domestic and international.

 A retired Air Force Lieutenant General, Mr. Jones was previously the Vice Commander of all U.S. Air Forces in Europe and in Africa, encompassing the Air Force’s command in 104 countries.  A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Mr. Jones held numerous leadership roles in his 35-year military career including oversight of air fields and large-scale command operations.

 A veteran of operations in Southern Watch, Desert Fox and Iraqi Freedom, Tom is a command pilot with more than 3,500 flying hours primarily in T-33, T-37, T-38 and F-16 aircraft. During his career, the retired three-star Lt. General served as an F-16 instructor pilot, an evaluator pilot and had numerous flying command positions. He commanded a fighter squadron, operations group, the 332^nd Expeditionary Wing in Southwest Asia during Operation Iraqi Freedom.Healso served as the Director, Strategic Plans & Assessment, U.S. Forces-Iraq, U.S. Central Command and held staff assignments at North American Aerospace Defense Command, Air Combat Command and the National Security Agency. Prior to his position as Vice Commander of U.S. Air Forces Europe and U.S. Air Forces Africa, Tom served as Director, Operational Capability Requirements, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans & Requirements, Headquarters U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C.
